Digital Infrared Wedding Photography!

Digital Infrared (IR) Photography is one of the newest, (and oldest) trends in Wedding Photography. It is used at it’s best to portray a dreamy, or fantasy look to wedding portraits. Most photographers shied away from IR in the earlier days of film, because of it’s sensivtivity to light, it required special handling and processing, and focusing was difficult and required the lens to be set with IR focusing points, plus the use of opaque filters made it very tricky!! Today there are alternatives to IR film, a converted Digital camera designed to shoot only IR Photographs. This is accomplished by replacing what’s called a low pass filter found on most digital cameras, with a IR filter. This filter is installed over the imaging sensor of the camera, blocking all visible light and allowing only the higher wavelengths of the IR spectrum to be recorded on the sensor. But enough technical stuff, the end result is a very different result then conventional color or black & white photography.  As you can see, it creates a very “Unreal” look!! Perfect for summertime when there is lots of vegetation that reflects IR light waves, this is how the leaves and grass goes white in the photo. It can also add dramatic skies and clouds, but only at the right time of day. The best time for IR photography is mid-day, when the sun is shining bright. This works out well in planning wedding photos, mid-day is the worst time to shoot conventional photos, shooting IR at this time of day allows for more flexibility and allows the photographer to capture what will probably be some of the best photos of the day, at mid-day. When the conditions allow, Fredric’s Photography will shoot a good amount of IR shots to add a unique look to wedding photos and albums. Be sure to ask how this will work with your wedding at your consultation meeting!! Hope you enjoy the samples here!
